Central University Launches Telecommunication Program to Bridge Industry Gaps in Sierra Leone

Central University, located at 1 Sillicon Hills Mile 91, has taken an important step forward in its commitment to inclusive education by establishing a telecommunications program. This initiative aims to address and mitigate the challenges faced by the telecommunications industry in Sierra Leone.

Telecommunication refers to the transmission of information over long distances by electronic means. This broad field encompasses various technologies and services that facilitate communication between individuals, businesses, and organizations across multiple platforms. Establishing this department, Central University seeks to equip students with the necessary skills and knowledge to contribute effectively to this vital sector.

Dr. Saidu Kanu, the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology at Central University, emphasized the importance of this new department. "Telecommunication is the backbone of modern communication and plays a critical role in our daily lives. Understanding and mastering this field, our students will be able to drive innovation and improve connectivity across Sierra Leone," he stated.


The establishment of the Telecommunication Department is seen as a timely intervention to bridge existing bottlenecks in the industry. Dr. Saidu Kanu, the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology at Central University, highlighted the current challenges faced by the sector. "Sierra Leone's telecommunications sector faces numerous obstacles, including inadequate infrastructure and limited access to cutting-edge technology. Our program is designed to produce graduates who can address these issues and propel the industry forward," he explained.

Students enrolled in the telecommunications program will benefit from a comprehensive curriculum that covers the latest advancements in the field. The courses will include practical training in areas such as network design, data transmission, and cybersecurity. This hands-on approach is intended to prepare students for real-world applications and foster a deeper understanding of the industry's complexities.

"Studying telecommunication in this era is key because it enables us to connect with the world and access information instantaneously," said Dr. Saidu Kanu, the Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology at Central University. "I am excited to be part of this pioneering department and look forward to contributing to the development of our country's telecommunication infrastructure." 

The private sector has also expressed optimism about the potential impact of Central University's new department. Sources close to the CEO of a leading telecom company in Sierra Leone remarked, "The telecommunications industry in Sierra Leone has immense growth potential. With the right talent and expertise, we can overcome our current limitations and achieve significant progress. The graduates from this program will be instrumental in driving that change."
