Commentary on the June 24 General Elections in Sierra Leone; the Importance of Unity for National Development

By: Tamba Steven Komba

The recent general elections held on June 24 in Sierra Leone have unfortunately left the country deeply divided along tribal and regional lines, exacerbating existing political tensions. This division, coupled with the reluctance of the main opposition party, the All People's Congress (APC), to accept the election results, has further heightened the political climate in the country. As fellow Sierra Leoneans, it is crucial that we reflect on the consequences of such divisions and emphasize the urgent need for unity to foster national development.

Sierra Leone has endured significant challenges throughout its history, including an eleven-year civil war, the devastating Ebola outbreak, the ongoing impact of COVID-19, and tragic natural disasters like the mudslide in 2017. These events have tested the resilience of our nation and its people. It is disheartening to witness the recurrence of deep divisions that threaten to impede progress and hinder the collective efforts towards rebuilding and development.

Tribal and regional divisions have plagued Sierra Leone for far too long, often leading to violence, discrimination, and a lack of inclusivity. It is essential to remember the painful lessons of the past and recognize that unity, not division, is the key to overcoming our challenges and achieving sustainable development. We must rise above political differences and prioritize the greater good of our nation.

In a diverse country like Sierra Leone, unity is not merely a lofty ideal but a practical necessity. Our strength lies in our diversity, and when we come together as one people, transcending tribal, regional, and political boundaries, we unlock the true potential of our nation. We can build a society that is inclusive, equitable, and prosperous for all.

It is important for political leaders, regardless of party affiliation, to prioritize national unity and put the interests of the country above personal or partisan agendas. Constructive dialogue, respect for democratic processes, and a commitment to the rule of law are vital for fostering a sense of trust and confidence in our institutions.

Additionally, as citizens, we have a responsibility to promote unity and discourage divisive tendencies. We must engage in peaceful and respectful discussions, valuing differing opinions and seeking common ground for the betterment of our society. It is through collaboration and understanding that we can address the pressing issues facing our country, such as poverty, corruption, and inadequate access to basic services.

Sierra Leone has demonstrated resilience in the face of adversity. We have overcome significant challenges before, and we can overcome them again. However, we must prioritize unity and work together towards a shared vision of progress and development. Only by embracing our diversity and fostering a sense of national cohesion can we build a brighter future for all Sierra Leoneans.

In conclusion, the recent general elections in Sierra Leone have highlighted the deep divisions that persist within our society. As we reflect on the consequences of these divisions, we must remember the importance of unity for national development. Sierra Leone has faced numerous hardships in its history, and it is essential that we learn from our past and strive for a future built on inclusivity, respect, and collaboration. Let us transcend tribal and regional lines, bridge the political divide, and work together towards a prosperous and united Sierra Leone.
